During World War II, Champion supplied the U.S. military with twist drills and countersinks. Following the war, the product range was expanded to include a broader range of drills, end mills, taps, dies, annular cutters, magnetic drill presses and masonry tools, all engineered for maximum performance.

Leon H Frey Leon H. Frey, president of Champion from 1964 through 2005 was a visionary leader and respected icon in the cutting tool industry. He served in the U.S. Navy aboard the U.S.S. Chukawan, a fleet oil tanker. Leon joined the company in 1964 and established the Champion brand by developing the Brute XL5 twist drill. Possessing a strong passion for the tool industry, Leon also contributed to the community in many ways, and served as a trustee on the board of South Nassau Communities Hospital. His compassion for employees resulted in a deep sense of loyalty and drive for perfection by those who worked under his leadership. Many of those who began their careers at Champion under Leon Frey’s mentoring and guidance are the company’s leaders today.
